More than Muse, in my opinion, is something that relates to someone or something when we need assistance or guidance. Through the ages there have been many a Muse. But what is a Muse. In ages past a Muse was someone who served as a companion, a friend, a lover of music or poetry or just someone you could rely on or prayed to for help. Who is your Muse. Do you have a Muse? I wonder!!!
History
In ancient times, Greek mythology, Muses were usually women. They were looked up to for inspiration or bringing out the artistic qualities in a person. They were goddesses associated with music and poetry. Later they included all the liberal arts and sciences. The most popular were the nine Muses we read about in the Odyssey. They were considered demigods… half deities and half human. They were the daughters of the all powerful Greek god, Zeus. Their mother was a mortal named Mnemosyne.
The Muses were often spoken of as virgins or at least as unmarried, but were on many occasions referred to as the mothers of famous sons, like Orpheus, Rhesus and others. Statues of the Muses were a popular decoration. Today you can view some of them at the Louvre in Paris. Calliope for epic poetry, Clio for history, Erato for love poetry, Euterpe for music, Melpomene of tragedy, Polyhymnia sacred poetry, Terpsichore for dance, Thalia comedy and Urania for astronomy…. each one was assigned a certain task to perform.
