For a long time I thought Churros were a product of Mexico. Now after researching, I find that Churros have been around for a very long, long time.

Origins in Egypt

Some people say Churros originated in Egypt. Since it doesn’t take too many ingredients to make a Churro, some theorize that already existed in ancient Egypt. Engravings found in the tomb of Ramses III shows workers processing wheat and making a dough, rolling it up and frying it. This may be possible. Ancestral dishes in Middle Eastern countries, related to how they were prepared by Egyptian people. Assuming this were true, Churros could be 3000 years old.

The Chinese

Somehow along the way, the Chinese also claim to be the parents of the Churro. Apparently the story goes, the Churro was a breakfast dish that consisted of a fried dough, but it wasn’t sweet. This was popular in southern China.

Portuguese merchants brought this recipe to the Iberian Peninsula. Salt exchanged for sugar. A bag used to spread the dough. Possibly brought to Europe during Marco Polo’s travels.

Artisan Churros, no matter who did what, the origins seem to point to Spain. The name comes or derives from a churra sheep or goat native to the Iberian peninsula. Then the Spaniards brought it to Mexico and now to us in the good old USA.
