Medicinal Plants and Herbs can be very beneficial when used and prepared the right way. I want to emphasize that these plants and herbs are not the cure all. They do help to some extent; however, once these remedies are applied, if there are no results, I recommend you see your family doctor.
Medicinal Plants and Herbs have been around for a long time
Plants and herbs have been around for a long time. Used by indigenous people and passed on through the ages from generation to generation. These remedies were passed on to me from my grandmother and my mom many years ago. Even today with modern medicine around, people turn to plants and herbs for certain ailments. So here goes, I hope you enjoy trying some of these remedies and I hope they help.
Cilantro
Something we use almost every day, if you like Spanish, Latin or Asian foods, is the Cilantro. We use cilantro in our Pico de Gallo (chopped onions, tomato, serrano peppers and cilantro) to spice our tacos with, and in our hot sauce (salsa) or meat dishes. But I was surprised when I found out that this plant or herb was also used for medicianal purposes. It has been used to help people get rid of heartburn. Heartburn can have causes that aren’t due to underlying disease. Spicy foods, alcohol, or overeating are some of the culprits that cause heartburn.
The following is a recipe or remedy that you can try next time you end up with heartburn. This is a very simple recipe.
First in a half liter of water, boil a handful of cilantro mixed with the juice of three lemons. Let it cool and drink one cup in the morning on an empty stomach. Simple enough. This should help in giving you relief from the heartburn. You can actually grow your own cilantro at home. Find the seeds at your garden store.
El Nopal
El Nopal also known as the prickly pear, also known as Tuna, Sabra from the Nahatl language used by the Aztecs. This is a popular suculant food mostly prepared during Lent. You can find nopal, nopalitos, in your grocery stores all along the U.S. / Mexican border. When you mix or saute the nopalitos for a while, add scrambled eggs and some tomato and onion, place some on a corn tortilla, add a little salt, and down the hatch. Ummmm!!! So good.
Nopal Has Many Uses
Nopal has many uses: inflamed bladders, used to treat diabetes, high cholesteral, obesity and hangovers. It has antiviral and anti inflamatory properties to reduce inflamation or swelling, in treating viral infections. Also, if the lungs are weak or frail, you apply bee honey on the middle of the nopal and leave it overnight. In the morning you eat it on an empty stomach. Continue use until you see improvement. Nopal is also good when roasted as medicine on wounds.
Well, these are just two of many plants and herbs that I will be bringing to you every month. Hope this helps.
