Medicinal Plants and Herbs

Medicinal plants and herbs from Mexico. These are the plants I am more familiar with. Indigenous people for centuries have been using these remedies. They were very knowledgeable and were able to heal using plants and herbs. Many are used in the foods we eat today. Compared to the Europeans during the last 14th and 15th centuries, the Aztecs and the Maya were by far more advanced with their science and astronomy, agriculture and architecture.

Aguacate (Avocado)

We use the Aguacate (Avocado) with our salads, in our pico de gallo. Guacamole or just by itself on a tortilla with a little salt. Umm! My mouth is starting to water. So delicious!!! Some call it our Mexican butter. Did you know that the Aguacate (Avocado) has health benefits?

The Avocado is easy to digest. It’s considered a fruit. It is recommended for people that are diabetic. There are several varieties of avocadoes. The one with the black skin is the most popular. You can find it in just about any mercado (market) in Mexico and along the border with the U.S. The skin is eatable and useful for treating those with intestinal worms.

This fruit is used for those with severe headaches. You drink the juice of two parts of the plant. It helps alleviate or kill the pain. For treatment of dry scalp, you prepare an avocado into a puree. Massage it on the head and leave for 5 minutes. Cover with a plastic bag. Wash with a shampoo that doesn’t have alkaline. If you have dry facial skin. Apply the avocado puree on the skin and leave for 20 minutes, wash off with warm water and pat dry. Do not rub.
